Nivkhi is naturally hardy and virile people, which after creating their own writing in 1932, developed their talent in art and literature. Nivkhi of Sakhalin (ancient name is Gilyaki) is very interesting people of this amazing island. Nivkhi's villages were exotic and populous. Though there are few of them now (about two thousands people), nivkhi didn't lose natural practice of making boats, hunting skis, dog-sledges and treatment of wood, birch bark, leather, herb.

Their tools always were of original shape and with amazing ornament. Clothes made of fish skin, dog fur, hide of marine and fur animals, dear, elk were very practical and beautiful. Nivkhi were always in the friendship with nature and never changed their places of living. They were perfect hunters and fishermen. Present hard time is another one test for this ancient small people, and nivkhi, as before, take their sap from nature.
