Far-Eastern Fishman Studio was registered in December 1996 by
Press Committee of the Russian Federation. The founder is
Charitable Public Foundation of Rescue of Kamchatka Salmon.
The purpose of its making is forming of an active wide public
opinion concerning problems of conservation and rational use of
biological resources in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
The first film which was made by the team of the future Studio in
March 1995, had a symbolic name--"About fisherman and
fish" and was dedicated to the problem of pollock of the
Okhotsk sea, which is the basic object of fishing of one of the
biggest fishing expeditions in the world, the total harvest of
which was two millions tones of fish. Pollock has become a really
goldfish for Russian fishermen, though about ten years ago
pollock did not have any value for them--there was a lot of fish
in those years besides pollock. But years have changed the
attitude to this species of fish. But these years did not changed
the attitude of fishermen to the problem of conservation of fish
stock and Russian fisherman still trust to Russian
"Perhaps" and for big earnings he is ready to waste
fish which feeds himself, his children and grandchildren.
In the film "Chronicle of fishery century" we tried to
analyze the forming of such attitude to fishing riches during
centenary history of fishing industry of the Far East. And
conclusion was not comforting--Russian fisherman does not feel
himself as holder in his waters, and that is why he does not
think about the conservation of fishing stocks, though this
holder arisen in many people who gave the best years of his life
to fishery profession.
In the series of videofilms "Polygon of Okhotsk
sea"--"Destiny of big fleet", "Russian,
Russian...", "Donut hole", "Hole of
bagel"--we study national aspects of problem of conservation
of fishing stocks of international poaching in opened part of
Okhotsk sea--in "hole of bagel" as Russian fishermen
call it, and of Bering sea--"Donut hole" as American
call this opened part.
The most interest of Far-Eastern viewers provoked the series of
films "Crab fever" ("Crabtrust", "Last
Emperor", "Rules of game", "Criminal
stories", "Catastrophe") about the causes for
demolition of unique stocks of crab in Kamchatka by Russian
fishermen. Films of Far-Eastern Fishery Studio were broadcasted
by TV companies of Kamchatka, Primorskiy and Khabarovskiy
regions, Sakhalin and Koryakskiy Autonomous area.
We (Sergey I. Vakhrin--the editor-in-chief and the author of
idea, the member of Russian Union of Cinematographers;
producer--Valeriy Gorbikov; cameraman--Vyacheslav Murashko) were
rewarded with the main prize in theme "Publicistic
Programmes" at International Festival of Televisual Films
and Programmes "Man and Sea" for a series of films
