APPEAL TO FISHING COMPANIES,
ASSOCIATIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS
Today we all, living on the Earth, become witnesses of the ecological catastrophe, burst out in the marine economic zone of Russia in the Far-East — in the Northern Pacific region.
The world has not yet realized all the importance of this PLANETARY catastrophe, connected with fishing out of enormous stocks of invaluable ecologically pure food protein by the Russian and foreign fishing fleet in a rush to fabulous profit. First of all, we speak about such a currency-intensive fish as pollack, the catches of which for the last years fell in the Russian economic zone.
Destruction of the most valuable fishing stocks, connected on one hand with well-being of so-called Russian “fishing mob” — i.e. corruption in the fishing industry of the main fishing regions of the Far-East, and on the other hand — with the lack of clear state position in a fight with “fishing mob” and conserving water biological resources.
Beginning with January of 2000, “Tikhookeansky vestnik” newspaper has collected and published on its pages the opinions, thoughts, commentaries and facts concerning the reasons of the ecological catastrophe in the marine economic zone of the Russian Far-East. The newspaper’s editorial staff gets ready to publish these materials on his English site “Northern Pacific”, i.e. to propose for world public discussion.
Interests of the “fishing mob” has been recently concentrated in Kamchatka, on the shelf of which there is the main fishery of the Far-East. On one hand, the administration of the Kamchatka region is involved in repartition of property and speculation — sale — of fish, and on the other hand — has agreed to begin oil and gas extraction on the shelf of Kamchatka.
The position of the Charitable public fund of conserving bioresources of the Northern Pacific (Northern Pacific fund), a founder of Northern Pacific digest and Tikhookeansky vestnik newspaper differs in some questions of principle from the opinion and position of the regional administration. The latter in its turn having an opportunity to affect Kamchatka fishing companies through fishing quotas’ distribution declared that if somebody among Kamchatka fishermen provides material support to Northern Pacific fund and its ecological mass media, he would be dispossessed of limits. This is absolutely uncontrolledness of the Kamchatka administration, encroachments on constitutional rights of Russian citizens, but it’s a fact. The threat of a governor may be realized.
So, Northern Pacific fund loses financial help of those people who is interested most of all both in conservation of fishing resources and protection of the shelf from its pollution in a case of oil and gas extraction.
That is why today we are looking for sponsors among those who is interested in making the information about the problems of conserving water biological resources in a marine economic zone in the Far-East of Russia a property of the world public and in publishing it on English “Northern Pacific” site.
We send you the announcements of publications of “Tikhookeansky vestnik” for 2000.
